The Mazda MX-5 RF's Folding Roof

Posted by

The Mazda MX-5 is currently in its fourth generation and it's looking better than ever. The small roadster is arguably the best rear-wheel drive vehicle as almost any enthusiast will tell you. You get decent power, a lightweight chassis, rear-wheel drive, a manual gearbox and access to open skies for not a whole lot of money. This may come out wrong because they're both different cars, but if you want a fun open-top BRZ/FRS/GT86 the MX-5 really fits the bill.

The MX-5's roof was never that hard to attach or detach. Sure it's manual, but it only takes a few moments. Well, the new MX-5 RF (retractable fastback) eliminates that issue (if it ever was an issue). In all fairness, it's not just about the automated roof. The shape is slightly different and some people might like that. The roof is very similar to that of the Porsche 911 Targa, and we don't mean just looks wise. The operation is pretty similar too, as you can witness in the video below.

The roof can open and close in 12 seconds flat, and you can do it on the move but only at speeds up to 6 mph. Rather amazingly, trunk space is the same. We have no idea how they managed to pull that off but they have. Love it, hate it? Let us know on our social media.
